More than £315,000 has been raised which has funded nearly

Of those, some 10,000 men lose their lives primarily due to the Cancer having spread outside of the Prostate Gland.

If caught early, Prostate Cancer can be treated with excellent future prognosis for the patient.

Mediwatch plc ("Mediwatch" or "Company" or "Group") announces that its final results for the year ended 31 October 2011 will be issued during the week commencing 30 January 2012.

The Group also issues the following trading update in advance of the announcement of the final results:

Mediwatch has maintained its turnover and increased profits and cash flows from operations during the year to 31 October 2011, in spite of Mediwatch's major markets in Europe and the USA suffering from economic turbulence. However, profit before tax for the year ended 31 October 2011 is expected to be £322,000 (unaudited) (2010: £233,000), materially lower than market expectations.

Revenues for the year ended 31 October 2011 are expected to be marginally higher at £10.6m (unaudited) (2010: £10.5m). Unfavourable global economic conditions, together with increased competition in the urodynamic market and delays in commercialising PSAwatch, hampered the Group's ability to increase turnover. In addition, gross margins have come under some pressure in the second half of the year to 31 October 2011 due to increased costs from some suppliers, which the Group was not able to pass on to customers, and increased competition in the urodynamic capital and consumer markets.

However, the re-organisation and cost reduction programme that commenced in Q1 2011 has continued in the second half, including the outsourcing of major elements of the Group's manufacturing and a reduction in fixed overheads. This has lead to further cost savings, although cost cutting in certain research and development projects has encountered delays.

Despite a delay during the year arising from the transfer of manufacturing of the test strip to a new site, PSAwatch is now at an early stage of commercialisation with clinical trials in France to gain reimbursement approval, direct marketing starting in Germany, Hong Kong, Mexico and China, growing sales in the UK private sector and the potential for further co-operation and trials with two international pharmaceutical companies.

The Directors have been encouraged by significant sales growth in developing markets including the Far East and Russia during the period, which provides a platform for future growth.

The Company continues to focus on internal efficiencies and the tight management of its cost base. During 2012 the Board anticipates the conclusion of a number of important research and development projects which are expected to strengthen and update the Group's existing product lines in urodynamics and ultrasound while reducing unit costs.

Arab health congress highlights current challenges across GCC

DUBAI: Highlighting the current challenges and seeking solutions to tackle the growing public health issues across the GCC, the world’s second largest healthcare conference - Arab Health Congress and Exhibition 2012 - kicked off in Dubai on Monday.

Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance and Industry, inaugurated the 37th edition of the four-day congress that runs until Jan.26 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, attracting over 71,900 healthcare professionals and hosting over 3,000 healthcare exhibitors from 70 countries.

Abdul Rahman Mohammad Al Owais, Acting UAE Minister of Health, said, “The Arab Health Congress has grown into the second largest exhibition in the world in the arena of healthcare and medical technology.”

“The congress can create significant impact by raising wide awareness among the residents in the UAE and the region,” he added.

Simon Page, managing director of Arab Health organisers Life Sciences-Informa Exhibitions, said that the conference focuses on the increasing ageing population, heavy burden of diseases including diabetes and outdated healthcare systems.

“The region’s largest healthcare event will assist healthcare experts by providing a platform to facilitate partnerships and future solutions for ageing populations and disease management,” he added.

According to him, the health congress continues to build on its conference portfolio offering a scientific and educational platform that comprises the world’s largest CME (Continuing Medical Education) accredited multi-track series of conferences.

Lisa Stephens, executive director of Informa Exhibitions, elaborated, “The conference has specifically developed a social media arena to allow delegates to communicate and engage in the wider medical community, in recognition of the trend towards greater engagement through social media.”

“Due to the importance of mobile health in the region, experts from the Middle East and internationally are set to gather tomorrow at the leading m+Health Conference,” she added.

The congress showcases new seminars including haematology track at Medlab, biomedical engineering, medical education, m+Health and wound care conferences.

This year’s Arab Health Congress will feature the return of the Middle East Interventional Cardiovascular conference, which will focus on providing delegates with an educational platform to underline the latest updates and improvements in the field of vascular medicine.

Manchester CITY hero Mike Summerbee has spoken about his battle with prostate cancer.

The 69-year-old was diagnosed after taking a routine test at a health event aimed at persuading other men to check themselves out.

Now Summerbee, who has undergone surgery and is making an excellent recovery, has thanked his family, the club, and the doctors who helped save his life. The legendary winger had been an at open day at the Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle last summer when medics asked if he wanted to have a PSA test – a simple procedure that can detect prostate cancer. He agreed to show how easy it was and encourage other men to do the same. But the star, who had felt fit and healthy, was stunned when he got his results a week later, revealing there was potentially something wrong.

After further tests and a biopsy, he was diagnosed with an aggressive but treatable form of prostate cancer. He underwent major surgery to remove the tumour in September and has since been told he is clear of the disease.

Summerbee said: “I’m the type of person that doesn’t like to bother the doctor at all. I’ve always been a fit person, touch wood, being a footballer. I went along to the health day to try to raise awareness of men’s health and I then had a bit of fun with the surgeons. I had my blood pressure checked and it was fine. We did a neck test for potential strokes and that came back clear too. I then had my blood tested - and they called me later to say I had a bit of a problem.

“I thought there was nothing wrong with me - I never felt ill at all. When I got the news I had prostate cancer and it was aggressive, I was shocked but I didn’t panic. I had no symptoms at all.” Summerbee – one of the stars of the famous City team of the 1960s and 1970s – said his experience had made him value his family more than ever before.

He said: “When you get something like this, you don't realise how much you need that support and how your wife or partner often has to carry so much of the burden.

“I’m just glad to be here and I hope to raise awareness of prostate cancer - that‘s why I‘m speaking about it. Men need to go to the doctor’s and ask for the test because prostate cancer really is a hidden killer.” Consultant urologist Andrew Sinclair, from Manchester Urology, was one of the medics who treated Summerbee at the Alexandra - and also helped to organise the health day. He said: “Mike very kindly agreed to help us out and support the event, which was fantastic, but we never expected it would also help to save his life.

“We found he had significant prostate cancer and it definitely needed to be discovered when it was. His operation was a success and his recovery has gone very well. If anyone is concerned about prostate cancer, they should see their GP to discuss further investigations.”Link to BBC article

Mediwatch (AIM:MDW) is pleased to announce that PSAwatch continues to make good progress in line with the company strategy. Since moving to a new manufacturing site and obtaining a stable supply of test strips, Mediwatch has actively promoted PSAwatch in the UK and international markets.

In the UK charitable groups are switching to using PSAwatch as a PSA measuring device in well-man prostate awareness meetings. Mediwatch has been working closely with the Graham Fulford Charitable Trust (GFCT) for a number of years and they have transitioned to using PSAwatch as their standard method of PSA testing. Over the past few years, the GFCT (www.grahamfulford.org.uk) has raised over £275,000 and conducted over 20,000 free PSA tests across the UK, leading to the early diagnosis of nearly 500 prostate cancers to date.

In France, a clinical study which involved testing over 200 men has been carried out over the course of 2011 comparing PSAwatch to laboratory PSA values. The study, which was led by one of France's leading urologists, has been conducted at six locations across the country and five sites have now completed with the remaining hospital expected to finish patient testing before the end of 2011.

Based on the results from the first five sites, AVF Biomédical (SAS), Mediwatch's distributor in France, has launched the PSAwatch system at the Annual French Urology (AFU) congress in Paris which was held between 16^th and 19^th November 2011and they have already received orders. It is estimated that around 6 million PSA tests are conducted in France each year, for assisting both diagnosis and surveillance of prostate disease.

Mediwatch has begun direct marketing of PSAwatch into Europe, Middle East, Asia Pacific and Latin America. A large clinical trial is scheduled to begin at the Royal Hospital in Melbourne in Australia in early 2012. In addition, Mediwatch are looking into increasing the utility of the reader into other applications. These are very positive developments for the product line which management expects will see increasing revenues and exposure.

PCaSO Prostate Cancer Network is a patient-led Support organisation with Branches covering Dorset, Hampshire and Sussex, whose aims are to improve the diagnosis, treatment, care and support to those affected by prostate cancer.

The services it offers are free for men, their families and anyone affected by prostate cancer.
PCaSO holds meetings in various centres in the South of England from Bournemouth to Eastbourne.

The objectives of PCaSO are:

To relieve the distress of men with prostate cancer and people affected by prostate cancer.
To help, inform and support people who have concerns about prostate cancer.
To advance education and information about prostate cancer to men who have or are at risk of the disease, to their partners, families and friends, and to the public at large.
To help promote better services for prostate cancer patients and those at risk of the disease.

UK - PSAwatch

• Working closely with Mediwatch’s distributor in France, AVF
Biomédical, Mediwatch has launched the PSAwatch system at the
French annual urology congress in Paris. A clinical trial is ongoing.

• Mediwatch has begun direct marketing of PSAwatch into Germany,
Korea, Hong Kong, Europe, Mexico & China.

• In Turkey Mediwatch will be providing tests for a major government
trial as soon as their funding is available.

• Mediwatch is investigating a potential new PSAwatch trial in Italy,
working with its distributor EBNeuro.

• In the UK, the Graham Fulford Charitable Trust (GFCT) has been using the PSAwatch system in conjunction with laboratory tests at events and clinics across the country in 2011. Over the past few years, the GFCThas raised over £275,000 and conducted over 20,000 free prostate cancer tests across the UK, leading to the early diagnosis of nearly 500 men to date. During this quarter the GFCT has been transitioning from the traditional method of shipping blood samples to a laboratory for testing to using PSAwatch as their standard testing method. This model is being rolled-out nationwide through local prostate charity groups and supported by the GFCT.
• Mediwatch met with two multinational pharmaceutical companies
in Mexico to discuss new trials in 2012 using the PSAwatch system,
following trials in 2010 & 2011.

• A large clinical trial is scheduled to begin at the Royal Hospital in
Melbourne in Australia in early 2012.

• In the UAE Mediwatch is investigating the use of PSAwatch in a
national PSA screening program - Mediwatch’s regional manager is
visiting 10 hospitals in 4 of the 7 Emirates to set up trials for 2012.

UK - Sales

• Mediwatch is introducing a new range of equipment for GI &
Neurology diagnostics (including EMG, EEG, and GI & pH studies),
working in conjunction with EBNeuro. The Mediwatch UK sales
representatives have been trained on these products in
November - December 2011.

• Mediwatch attended 5 exhibitions in the UK in 2011, including the
British Urology Association Society annual meeting in Liverpool.

• This year Mediwatch held two National Sales Meetings to review
operations in the UK, bring new representatives into the direct sales
team and introduce additional products to their portfolio, with very
positive results.

UK - R&D

• The UK product development team has been working on several majorprojects,including a new advanced ultrasound scanner for bladder volume measurements.

• The hardware and software for Mediwatch’s next-generation urodynamics & anorectal manometry system is being worked on in combination by both the UK and USA product development teams.

Asia & Middle East

• Mediwatch enjoyed a year on year sales increase of 50% across theregion, largely due to significant sales growth in Japan, Australia, Korea and Malaysia.

• Dr Philip Stimpson & Anders Pedersen travelled to China to meet
with potential distributors and manufacturers in an effort to expand
Mediwatch’s product range. Training has started in mainland China
where Mediwatch has appointed Newaytec in Beijing to represent
Mediwatch’s complete range of products, which are presently going
through SFDA approvals. In anticipation of approvals they attended
the China Medical Equipment Fair exhibition in Shenzhen, the Chinese Urological Association Annual Meeting in Nanjing (showing all Mediwatch’s products on the Newaytec stand), and held a training workshop in Hong Kong where they have succeeded in appointing S&V Samford as our new distributor.

• Mediwatch joined its Japanese distributor, MC Medical to exhibit at the World Endourology Congress in Kyoto.

• Device Technologies, the Mediwatch distributor in Australia & New Zealand, is having a great year. They have managed to secure Clinic Sensic orders in New Zealand and won their first order for a Colorectal System from St Vincent’s Hospital in Australia.

• Mediwatch will be exhibiting at the Arab Health meeting in Dubai in
January 2012.

Europe

• France - AVF Biomédical had a strong year end sales performance across the range of products, in total increasing by 19% from 2010.

• Germany - Promedia year on year sales increased by 10%.

• Russia - Strong sales throughout 2011 by Infomed were double those from 2010, particularly for the urodynamics range.

• Mediwatch is negotiating with a large European company to buy and license new technology for gastro-intestinal diagnostic applications.

Global

• The Allergan trial using Mediwatch’s Urodyn+ flowmeters was
scheduled to end in 2011 but has been extended and is still
ongoing, with Mediwatch’s equipment being used in hospitals
around the world.

USA - Sales

• In the USA Mediwatch is now enrolled in the government bid
contracting system, allowing Mediwatch to more easily sell to the
large Veterans’ Association and military hospital network. Mediwatch
is also now contracted with several private sector group purchasing
organizations (GPOs), which gives Mediwatch the ability to market and sell to potential customers that are contracted with those GPOs.

• This year Mediwatch attended a total of 20 conferences in the USA.At the American Urology Association (AUA) national congress in Washington DC Mediwatch showed off its complete equipment range on a new exhibition stand. In May 2012 Mediwatch will be attending the AUA in Atlanta Georgia.

• Mediwatch is working with two large distribution companies to use their national sales teams to reach additional markets.

• Mobilewatch continues to expand under the leadership of Adam Silbersweig and Diane Durell, with new customers in Washington state and Florida. A dedicated web portal for Mobilewatch in the USA is being set up to market to customers.

USA - R&D

• Mediwatch’s product development team has several new products
in the pipeline, and is working on EMR (electronic medical records)
connectivity. All of Mediwatch’s past customers are potential targets
for this EMR connectivity upgrade. This ongoing development improves Mediwatch’s present EMR connectivity with additional features and smoother setup. EMR is an enhancement that the marketplace is demanding more and more frequently.

Latin America

• This quarter Mediwatch held discussions with potential new
distributors in Brazil, Peru, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Columbia and
Argentina (in October Mediwatch exhibited at the Argentinian national urology meeting in Buenos Aires).

• Mediwatch is working closely with its Mexican distributor, Endomedica, to extend its share of the PSA testing market. Mediwatch will be training end-users and Endomedica sales staff in Mexico City in December at a hospital that recently purchased two large capital systems.

• Mediwatch’s goal for 2012 is to have strong representation in North, Central and South America, in particular in the above countries.

Canada

• Mediwatch has been setting up a distribution network in Canada,
with representation in British Columbia, Ontario & the Maritimes,
and a regional sales manager based in the USA. Mediwatch are in
negotiations at present for representation in Quebec and other regions to complete sales coverage across the country.

Staff changes in the USA

• Brian Hersh BA, joined as the VP of US operations in August 2011. He has a diverse background in Corporate Finance, Sales & Marketing, Operations and Business Development. Most recently he has used his diverse experience and skill sets to help many companies in the role of Business Consultant and Growth Strategist. His experience in medical laboratory management, pharmaceutical, diagnostic testing, and internet based marketing all bring key skills to Mediwatch.

• Mike Bradley MBA, the newly appointed West Coast Sales Manager,
joins Casey Rosa and Jeff Dannenberg to fill a key gap in Mediwatch’s sales structure. He is working to bring Mediwatch comprehensive coverage over the Western region, in particular strengthening the Californian sales team.

• Adam Silbersweig joined the Mobilewatch management team and brings telesales and diagnostic testing experience to the Mobile team. The Florida office is experimenting with an external sales team,travelling out to visit clients and market the Mobilewatch service.

• Jorge Bracho M.D. has joined the Mediwatch clinical team. He combines clinical expertise for customer support with Latin American sales management.

• Graham Taylor-Jones MEng joins the product development team with a specialty in hardware. Alicia Gardner BA joins the product development team with an emphasis on software. Eddie Johnson has transferred from service to product development, he is focusing on the EMR connectivity project.

Staff changes in the UK

• Colm Croskery FCA B,Comm MBA has transferred to group CFO for
Mediwatch Plc. Colm has been with Mediwatch since July 2007,
initially joining as Operations Manager, becoming a director in
January 2008.

• Peter Griffiths MBA, is the new Mediwatch General Manager of
Operations in the UK. He has an impressive operations background
in high tech regulated sectors, including the media, electronics,
polymer science, Tier 1 aerospace manufacture and more recently
bio-compatible materials for medical device manufacturers. Peter
is working closely with the UK management team to improve the
manufacturing and production process along with improving the
timeline for new product development.

• Howard Brobin has been promoted to UK sales manager. He has
21 years of experience of selling urology and neuro-physiology
equipment, in particular urodynamics systems, into the UK market.

Introduction
This manual has been developed as a guide to groups putting on
Prostate Health Awareness road shows including PSA tests using the
Mediwatch PSA watch Bioscan which is designed to give an “indicative” PSA score within ten minutes of the sample being processed. By definition this manual is embryonic and user’s feedback will be much appreciated.

Background

The Graham Fulford Charitable Trust was formed by Graham Fulford
late 2004 having had a very dear friend and a close relative diagnosed with prostate cancer. Sadly both lost their fight against this insidious disease having, like many, been diagnosed too late.

Over the last 7 years the Trust has, working closely with David Baxter
Smith M.A,M.Sc.,B.A.O.,F.R.C.S. Consultant Urological Surgeon and the Kidderminster Prostate Cancer Support Group carried out approaching 18,000 PSA tests all over the country and have found in excess of 422 prostate cancers at the time of writing. During this period the trust has been liaising with Mediwatch to help them refine the accuracy of the testing strips used by their PSA watch point of care Bioscan machine.

The great advantage of using these is not only the speed of response of getting the result (10 minutes as against up to 14 days) but also the flexibility it gives in enabling regular events to be held in local
communities without the need for large halls and very expensive lab machines etc.

This manual is designed to help a launch of using these machines more widely. In effect any “group” having Bioscans and a pool of helpers (particularly people trained in the operation of the Bioscan) can offer a “stand alone” awareness facility. Having used the term “stand alone” it is essential to understand all such groups will have the full support of TGFCT (with the experience gained in holding in excess of 100 events all over the country) David Baxter Smith and the team at Mediwatch.

Summary of Recommendation and Evidence

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends against prostate-specific antigen (PSA)-based screening for prostate cancer. This is a grade D recommendation.This recommendation applies to men in the U.S. population that do not have symptoms that are highly suspicious for prostate cancer, regardless of age, race, or family history. The Task Force did not evaluate the use of the PSA test as part of a diagnostic strategy in men with symptoms that are highly suspicious for prostate cancer. This recommendation also does not consider the use of the PSA test for surveillance after diagnosis and/or treatment of prostate cancer.
U.S. Preventive Services Task Force Recommendation Statement

U.S. Panel Says No to Prostate Screening for Healthy Men

Healthy men should no longer receive a P.S.A. blood test to screen for prostate cancer because the test does not save lives over all and often leads to more tests and treatments that needlessly cause pain, impotence and incontinence in many, a key government health panel has decided.

The draft recommendation, by the United States Preventive Services Task Force and due for official release next week, is based on the results of five well-controlled clinical trials and could substantially change the care given to men 50 and older. There are 44 million such men in the United States, and 33 million of them have already had a P.S.A. test — sometimes without their knowledge — during routine physicals.

Based at our offices in Rugby you will also carry out diagnostics and repairs to equipment returned to base. Reporting to the UK and Ireland Sales Manager you will be able to prioritise and respond to our customers needs.Experience in a similar role is essential and you should have excellent skills in repairing and programming computers.

The Graham Fulford Charitable Trust

We are very pleased to announce that the first four scanners to be donated by the Charity have gone to Chorleywood and Hereford. Together with the consumables donated along with the scanners this first donations means that 200 tests can be carried out in each area.

Further donations are planned over the next few weeks for:
Olney
Crewe
Stourbridge
Cumbria
Tranmere &
Warwick

This will represent a total investment to date of some £25,600.Graham hopes to have established 20 support groups offering the facility by the middle of 2012 with target of 25,000 PSA tests to be conducted over the year. Graham said “We generally find 25 cancers for every 1000 tests conducted and have so far helped find some 450 cancers alongside numerous other prostate conditions that may simply require medication”.

4 Bioscanners Donated

Our First Mediwatch Test Sessions 31/08/11

The charity has recently carried out two highly successful pilot testing sessions utilising the very latest Mediwatch PSA Watch Bioscanners.

These new scanners allow us to process blood samples and provide results in under 15 minutes.The first sessions were held in Warwick and Rugby with 36 men tested at each venue. Graham Fulford said, “We were absolutely delighted with success of both events and feedback from those attending was generally excellent. With any new technology there are bound to be a few teething issues which have since been resolved and we are looking forward to rolling out a national programme of events via local support groups throughout 2012”

As far as I am aware there is only one Bioscan linked with PSA testing in 10 minutes and that is a PSAwatch cassette which is then read by the Bioscan.

MEN over the age of 50 are being urged to get their prostate checked at a special, organised event taking place in Winsford next week.
Gary Steele, Winsford resident and campaigner for better prostate care, has arranged for the event to go ahead in a bid to educate more men and alleviate the fears associated with checking prostate cancer.
The event, to be held at Winsford Conservative Club, in Ways Green, will give men the opportunity to find out their PSA in just 10 minutes using the latest equipment, called a Bioscan.
Gary, who is also the chairman of Leighton Hospital Prostate Cancer Support Group, said: “The equipment has been used for about two years but it is very sparse – it’s only group like us that are using it at the moment.
“Since we have been doing tests like these more and more men have been turning up, probably because we’re not in a doctors environment.
“The test takes just a couple of minutes and uses a small blood sample taken from the thumb.”
Gary said that an average of eight per cent of men test positive, with 15 per cent recording a borderline score.
“The good side is the fact those men are in the system to be treated or on active surveillance,” he added.
“The Bioscan will provide us with the means to test men anywhere, anytime and may just help to reduce the present high mortality from this type of cancer.”
The session will be held on Thursday, September 22, starting at 11am.

The latest ground breaking project is the sponsorship at a cost of £36,000 – of twelve stand alone, ‘point of care’ facilities to be spread all over the UK whereby men will be able to have “on the spot” PSA tests which will give them their PSA score within 10 minutes.

Graham for the charity said “this is a very exciting time for us and we are working very closely with the British manufacturers of this very innovative solution to provide a very high quality service with the caring back up we have striven to provide over the past six years whereby abnormal reading results are followed up”.

He went on to thank David Baxter Smith for his unstinting effort in this area of the charities activities. “It’s all down to him really – without his dedicated support none of this would have been possible. He even gives his home telephone number so that men with any concerns can ring him at home at any time.

He’s a truly remarkable man”

Overview

While the world economies are in a recovering process the Group is positioning itself in a strong position to pursue its strategy of being a one-stop provider of urological diagnostic equipment, supplies and now services to the international healthcare markets. Having been able to show steady revenue growth, albeit modest growth, over the past several years, Mediwatch has demonstrated its ability to maintain and increase its customer base. The Group has also been able to develop new technologies, add third party products and launch a service business to increase its offering to the global market. These accomplishments are expected to contribute to the Group's growth in the future.

PSAwatch continues to make good progress. Moving to a new manufacturing site has resulted in a stable supply of test strips. Charitable groups are excited about the point-of-care device and are now planning to use PSAwatch as a PSA measuring device in well-man prostate awareness meetings. This is a very positive development for the product line which management expects will see increasing revenues and exposure.

In the US the Mobilewatch Clinic service is gaining traction. Mobilewatch Clinic service offers medical practitioners who may lack the volume of cases or the recurring patient episodes necessary to justify the capital equipment outlay with an outsourced diagnostic testing service without the need to purchase capital equipment. Multiple sites in the base territory of Florida have been established and the utilisation at these sites is increasing. Opportunities have presented themselves in other states in the US which are being pursued. Other countries are being investigated for the expansion of this business model.

Trading

In the six month period to 30 April 2011, Group turnover was £5,095,000, (H1 2010: £4,959,000). Revenue remained equally split with almost 50% from the US and 50% from Europe and the rest of world (ROW) as it was in the comparative period last year. The product mix experienced during the first half of the 2011 financial year was also similar to that experienced in the first half of 2010.

The Group achieved an EBITDA of £272,000 for the six months to 30 April 2011 (H1 2010: £290,000). As previously reported, gross margins have come under pressure due to increases in component and manufacturing costs and increased industry competition. This has led to a reduction of gross profits by approximately 1% when compared to the second half of 2010. In a concerted effort to improve margins, management are implementing a number of programmes aimed at reducing manufacturing costs. In addition, the Company has been actively pursuing a strategy of reducing overhead expenses over the last six months with the reported level of overheads 11% below that for the second half of 2010. Management expects these savings to continue throughout the rest of the financial year.

UK Operations

Highlights from the UK operations include:

- Implemented a programme to reduce the fixed costs of manufacturing through outsourcing the manufacturing process of several products both in the UK and the US;

- Advancements in the manufacturing process for PSAwatch test strips on the back of moving manufacturing facilities (see Research and Development below);

- Increased sales of Bardscan in H1 of 2011 (£385,000) over H1 2010 (£200,000);

- The UK sales team has significantly increased revenues from urodynamic consumables thus providing a source of consistent revenues to compliment one-off revenues from capital sales; and

- Significant growth in Far East markets occurred in H1 2011.

US Operations

Highlights from the US operations include:

- Execution and continued efforts to secure purchasing agreements with medical buying groups;

- Development of Mobilewatch Clinic services within Florida along with efforts being made to now expand into additional states; and

- The initiation of a programme to begin outsourced manufacturing of certain products in the US, local to the Mediwatch USA office, in an effort to reduce both manufacturing costs and intercontinental shipping costs.

Research and development

Expenditure on research and development, including capitalised costs, was £283,000 (H1 2010: £350,000) during the six months to 30 April 2011. Several capital intensive projects are reaching the commercialisation phase, reducing the amount of capital required, generating revenues and close to contributing to profits. These projects include:

- Mobilewatch - investment in the software development is complete as is the initial investment in capital equipment to get the initial phase underway. This division is serving customers, generating revenue and no-longer consuming cash. Management expects this service to be running on a cash and profits generative basis by the year end;

- PSAwatch - production was successfully transferred to a new outsourced production facility in June 2011. The transfer gives the Group the ability to rapidly scale up production as volumes build. Opportunities are being explored for additional cancer markers to be added to the PSAwatch platform to increase the utilisation of the platforms technology. Clinical trials currently underway include studies in France and Germany. Additionally, trials in the UK, US and Australasia are considering PSAwatch for inclusion in their studies which are expected to commence in the near future. Approvals are being sought for marketing PSAwatch in China and Japan. In addition, we are undertaking a feasibility study to explore the possibilities of both reducing the manufacturing costs of the Bioscan reader and increasing the utility of the reader into other applications; and

- Venus - The Venus brand Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation system has now been completed, launched and is being sold in the US. No additional funds were spent on development of this product in the period.

Other ongoing projects include:

- Development of a new lower cost ultrasound platform requiring minimal resources as it leverages software and other technology utilised in existing products;

- Development of a new diagnostic platform that incorporates urodynamics, ARM, pudendal nerve stimulation, ultrasound and uroflowmetry. This new platform will use industry standard information technology including wireless and networking capabilities; and

- Development of a low cost urodynamic system and software package that is portable and easy to use aimed at the Mobilewatch Clinic business.

Management and employees

The board would like to take this opportunity to thank all employees for their hard work and contribution in achieving the continuing success of the business. We would also like to congratulate Mark Emberton, non-executive Director on being appointed Professor of Urology for Interventional Oncology at University College London Hospital. Further congratulations to Group CEO and President of MediwatchUSA Inc. Philip Stimpson on being awarded a doctorate degree from Staffordshire University for his contribution to research in medical diagnostics.

As from August the 8th Christian Rollins, Finance Director, will be resigning his position to assume a position with a much larger Group in a different market. The Board would like to thank Mr. Rollins for his four and a half years of excellent service, especially his strong contribution towards the transition of the Medtronic Urology division into Mediwatch plc. We wish him every success in the future and with the development of his career. Colm Croskery will replace Mr. Rollins as Group Finance Director. Mr. Croskery (B. Comm, MBA) is a Chartered Accountant with long experience of running large medical companies including his time over the last four years with Mediwatch Plc where he has served as Chief Operating Officer and has been responsible for the daily operations of the Group and the finances of the UK operations.

The Board is taking this opportunity to make the following additional changes within the Group to take advantages of the new direction it intends to take:

- Dr. Marcus Harrison who is currently the Director of Research and Development for Mediwatch Biomedical will be nominated as Chief Operating Officer for the Group. Dr. Harrison holds a Bachelors of Science in Physics, a PhD in Theoretical Physics and has extensive experience in technical, programme and product management positions.

- Brian Hersh has been appointed to Executive Vice President of Mediwatch USA, reporting to the President of US Operations. Mr. Hersh has a degree in Finance, is a candidate for an MBA and brings with him extensive experience in general management, sales & marketing and finance.

These management changes will provide the Group with the infrastructure to progress seamlessly through its growth strategies for the future.

Current trading and outlook

Overall the Company's performance for the first half of 2011 was in line with management's expectations. The Board is pleased to have been able to achieve a modest increase in turnover whilst also taking action to reduce overheads and protect profits and cash flows. Development projects are reaching a phase of commercialisation which requires less capital outlay and are closer to contributing to revenue and profits.

Efforts continue in the US to secure additional umbrella purchasing agreements with buying groups. The addition of several new partnerships to the Government Services Agreement obtained in December of 2010 builds on this exciting potential. These relationships are beginning to deliver sales in the current period that are expected to grow in future periods.

With the Chinese market becoming more consumer orientated, Mediwatch is positioning itself to take advantage of this emerging market. To this end, a distributor has been appointed in Beijing and Hong Kong to represent the Group's products, and a specialist company has been appointed to obtain regulatory approvals for this market which will take from 12 to 18 months. Mediwatch is exhibiting at the Chinese urology congress in October 2011 as part of the pre launch preparations.

In addition to the progress made this year with PSAwatch, the development team continues to work to complete projects related to new urodynamics and ultrasound platforms, which will both increase the range of products offered by the Group and ensure the latest technologies are used to keep the Group's products in the forefront of the range offered in its markets.

Norwich bobby gets on his bike to raise awareness of prostate cancer

A Norwich policeman has pledged to cycle the length of the UK to raise awareness of prostate cancer after seeing his friend battle the disease.

Graham Finney, of George Berrow Road, was inspired to take on the epic Land's End to John O'Groats challenge from Saturday 2 July to Tuesday 12 July in support of his friend, Mark Kenealy, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer two years ago when he was just 49 years old.

Graham is hoping that his gruelling ten day journey will not only help to raise awareness of the disease, but a target of £3,000 for The Prostate Cancer Charity along the way.

Graham, who is taking on the challenge unsupported alongside his friend Kevin Hanner, said: "Mark's diagnosis happened so quickly and the way he dealt with it has been amazing. I'd always wanted to do something like this, but Mark's situation really galvanised my commitment to take on this challenge. That and the fact that I am getting old and it won't be long before I won't be able to do it!

"I've always liked cycling, but my job means that I do a lot of travelling in the car. I just don't get the exercise I used to and began to notice I was sitting down more and more. Training for Land's End to John O'Groats though has meant I spend as much time on the bike as possible. I try and do a 50 mile ride on the weekend and 25 miles of an evening. In the winter I did turbo training, which was a bit dull, but now that summer is here, it's great to spend as much time outside as possible."

Kevin, an Operations Manager of City Reach Health Services, added: "With a history of working in frontline health services I can not speak highly enough of the work carried out by The Prostate Cancer Charity and the highly valuable support they provide.

I previously cycled from John O'Groats to Land's End in 2005, but am I keen to see what it looks like going the other way."

Tour de France 2011: Millar and Thomas in top four

Early days but....

Scotland's David Millar and Wales' Geraint Thomas are both in the top four after the second stage of the Tour de France on Sunday.

Team Garmin-Cervelo won the 23km team time trial to claim their first Tour de France stage win and put Norway's Thor Hushovd in the leader's yellow jersey.

Millar is second overall, on the same time as team-mate Hushovd, while Cadel Evans of BMC lies one second behind.

Team Sky's Thomas moved up to fourth overall, four seconds off the pace.

Team Garmin-Cervelo recorded a time of 24 minutes, 48 seconds to win the stage by four seconds from BMC Racing and Team Sky.

The British-based Sky outfit had hoped to propel Thomas into the yellow jersey after the 25-year-old's sixth-placed finish on Saturday's opening stage left him only six seconds behind race leader Philippe Gilbert.

The team, which includes Thomas's fellow Olympic track pursuit gold medallist Bradley Wiggins, started quickly and recorded the quickest time of nine minutes, one second at the nine kilometre checkpoint, but were unable to keep up their pace.

"We attacked it like we said we would and it was a great effort by everyone," said Thomas, who retains the white jersey as the best young rider.

"We rode it well. We knew we were up [after the first checkpoint] but it wasn't even a second and we lost two guys quite early.

"We are a bit disappointed as we really wanted to win but Brad [Wiggins] is still up there in the general classification and that's what matters."

Wiggins is 12th in the overall standings and, along with Thomas, just four seconds behind leader Hushovd.

"Today wasn't about egos, it was about the performance of the team," he stated.

"We gained more time on some of the guys and it's been a fantastic start to this year's Tour. G [Geraint Thomas] was hungry and that's the only tinge of disappointment, that he didn't get the [yellow] jersey."

Andy Schleck's Leopard Trek team and Mark Cavendish's HTC-Highroad squad, which was was hampered by losing Bernhard Eisel to a crash early on, were five seconds behind Garmin-Cervelo, with Alberto Contador's Saxo Bank-SunGard squad eighth, 28 seconds behind.

The result means that three-time winner and pre-race favourite Contador is now one minute, 42 seconds adrift of Hushovd but more crucially, he is 1:41 and 1:38 behind Evans and Andy Schleck, who both share the past four runners-up places, respectively.

6/16/2011 - EXHIBITTRADER.COM, INC., a Dallas-based corporation, recently partnered with Mediwatch USA in creating a booth environment to meet design parameters for their AUA (American Urological Association) meeting.

The annual event was held at the Walter E Washington Convention Center in D.C. from the 14th thru 19th of May this year. Now in its 106th year, the AUA Annual Meeting is the largest gathering of urologists in the world. The company furnished Mediwatch USA with a custom, modular 20 X 20 property to fill various marketing objectives.

Mediwatch USA desired elevated branding exposure without incurring the cost of rigger labor for installing a hanging sign. The display answered that need by incorporating a 20 foot graphic tower into the design. Nine, back-lit graphic lightboxes met the client’s wishes for illuminated, high impact graphics. Using an Abex 900 custom modular panel system, allowed for creation of a unique custom display, while retaining all the benefits of a modular system. The exhibit contained three individual workstations/demo areas with LCD monitors and a semi-private conference room. Characteristics of the Abex 900 help reduce the cost of drayage, set-up and shipping associated with Trade Show Booths.

myFOXdetroit.com - Prostate cancer is the most common type of non-skin cancer found in American men, affecting one in six, and is the second leading cause of death, according to the American Cancer Society. More than 217,000 new cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed in the United States in 2010, with more than 32,000 men losing their fight with the disease.

The best defense against prostate cancer is early detection, which is why the Michigan Institute of Urology (MIU) is hosting its Third Annual MIU Run for the Ribbon on Fathers Day, Sunday, June 19 at 8 a.m. at the Detroit Zoo. The MIU Run for the Ribbon 5K run/walk is led by MIU CEO Alphonse Santino, M.D. and coordinated by MIU urologist Michael Lutz, M.D. MIU developed the run to increase awareness about prostate cancer and educate the public about the disease, including detection, prevention and treatment.

By tying prostate cancer awareness to the MIU Run for the Ribbon, we hope men, supported by their families, will be inspired to be proactive about their health. The risk of developing prostate cancer increases as a man ages, so men need to choose to know about their health with appropriate screenings. If youre going to fight like a man, you need to know everything you can, as early as you can, about your opponent, said Lutz. We hope to see more runners than ever this year as this event grows, along with awareness of prostate cancer.

MIU Run for the Ribbon has partnered with the American Cancer Society, The Prostate Conditions Education Council and Prostate Awareness and Cancer Education (PACE) Race Series and is one of only 18 sanctioned PACE races across the country.

The cost for early registration, made by May 30, is $20 for adults and $10 for children. Registrations made from May 31 to June 18 are $25 for adults and $15 for children. Race day registration is $30 for adults and $20 for children. Online registration at MIURunForTheRibbon.org is available until June 14, 2011.

T-shirts, blue ribbons honoring those with prostate cancer and medals will be awarded to all participants and finishers. Those with the disease will be given a hat to be honored and supported throughout the race for their courage.

Prior to the Run, on Friday, June 17, 2011, MIU will host its Run for the Ribbon Gala at Andiamo Warren at 7 p.m. The event features live entertainment by the Simone Vitale Band, a strolling dinner, cocktails, a silent auction and dancing to DJ Mike Anthony. Tickets for the event begin at $175 each.

Proceeds from both events will benefit prostate cancer treatment, research and education in the state of Michigan.

Trading Update for the six months to 30 April 2011

Mediwatch plc ("Mediwatch" or "the Company") (AIM: MDW), the innovative urological diagnostic manufacturing company, announces an update on the trading results for the six months to 30 April 2011.

The Directors of Mediwatch are pleased to report that in a more challenging marketplace turnover for the first six months of the 2011 financial year was marginally ahead of the same period last year. However, gross margins have come under pressure due to increases in component and manufacturing costs and increased industry competition. This has led to a reduction of gross profits by approximately 1% when compared to the second half of 2010.

In a concerted effort to improve margins, management is implementing a number of programmes aimed at reducing manufacturing costs. In addition, the Company has been actively pursuing a strategy of reducing overhead expenses over the last six months and the current level of overheads is 11% below that for the second half of 2010. Management expects these savings to continue throughout the rest of the financial year. Furthermore, research and development costs have also been reduced by 19% in the first half of the financial year as compared to those costs for the same period the previous year.

Mediwatch is pleased to announce that its wholly owned subsidiary, Mediwatch USA Inc. has executed a three year contract with Amerinet, Inc. to supply the Portascan+ unit to the Amerinet hospital network. The Amerinet network consists of over 41,000 hospitals, institutions and healthcare providers. The Mediwatch Portascan+ unit will be made available to this network through this agreement.

New product introductions which are expected to contribute to sales in the second half include Urinewatch, a comprehensive urinalysis system which is currently available and a new bladder ultrasound platform which is expected to be available from July 2011.

MobileWatch is continuing its progress in Florida and the Board is looking at various growth strategies to extend the programme into other states in the US.

In house manufacturing of PSAwatch is now well underway and a constructive marketing programme has been initiated.

The US division continues to secure group purchasing agreements for the Company's products with the most recent agreement with Amerinet and an arrangement with PSS World Medical, Inc. to market its products and services.

Overall, the Company's performance for the first half of the 2011 financial year is in line with management's expectations and the reduction in costs has enabled the Company to continue to be profitable in difficult markets. With the introduction of new products the Board is optimistic for the second half of the 2011 financial year.

New Monograph Unveiled at American Urological Association 2011 Annual Meeting Underscores Prevalence of Condition, Encourages Open Dialogue

WASHINGTON, May 16, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- An estimated one in three women experience stress urinary incontinence (SUI), a condition characterized by involuntary loss of urine due to forces on the bladder caused by physical movement of the body. Although SUI can interfere with quality of life, it is often left untreated due to the personal nature of its symptoms which leave women feeling embarrassed about their bodies and hesitant to discuss or report their urinary leakage. To bridge this communication gap, the American Urological Association (AUA) Foundation issued a new Monograph today to encourage women and their healthcare providers to have open discussions about SUI, and to empower women to make lifestyle changes to decrease their risk of this condition and understand that they are not alone if they have SUI.

The Monograph, titled "Stress Urinary Incontinence: Monograph from the AUA Foundation," provides a breadth of information about SUI, including symptoms, risk factors, prevalence and common myths associated with the condition. By making this important information accessible to the public, the AUA Foundation is committed to advancing the understanding of SUI, reducing the stigma associated with its symptoms and stimulating women to seek treatment.

"The prevalence of SUI is jaw-dropping and costs society an estimated $8 billion annually,(1) yet similar to the subject of erectile dysfunction, it is still not openly discussed in public and even among some healthcare providers," stated AUA Foundation Executive Director Sandra Vassos, MPH. "The information presented in the Monograph is intended to help women recognize that SUI is more common than they may think, and to encourage them to open up about their experiences with SUI as a means to better understand the condition."

Symptoms of SUI vary widely from light to heavy leakage which may occur during rigorous activity or natural reflexes, such as playing sports or coughing; but in more severe cases, leakage may occur due to low impact movements, such as standing up, walking or bending over. Because these symptoms often lead to feelings of isolation, they may interfere with women's day-to-day activities, impact their relationships, and prevent them from opening up about their condition. As a result, many women with SUI may miss important opportunities to learn more about SUI and manage its symptoms.

The new Monograph highlights ways to prevent or manage the symptoms of SUI, including lifestyle changes, urinary control devices or surgery. Some women are only bothered by heavy or large amounts of leakage, whereas others are bothered by any leakage. Women often manage SUI by using mini pads, sanitary pads or incontinence pads.

Also outlined in the Monograph is information about certain risk factors associated with SUI that, once understood, may help to prevent the incidence of SUI in some women. For instance, overweight and obese women are more prone to SUI, and evidence shows that weight loss may improve urinary incontinence in obese women. AUA-Single PSA Before Age 50 Stratifies Men at Risk

May 17, 2011 (Washington, DC) — The long-term risk for prostate cancer can be predicted from a 1-time prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test before 50 years of age, according to a study presented here at the American Urological Association (AUA) 2011 Annual Scientific Meeting.

The study, which comes from a population of more than 20,000 Swedish men, indicates that men with a PSA value above 1.5 ng/mL between the ages of 45 and 49 years account for nearly half of the prostate cancer deaths over the next 30 years or so.

Only 10% of the men in the study had such high PSA values at this relatively young age, noted lead author Andrew Vickers, PhD, from the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

The "take-home message" from the study is that, on the basis of a PSA value obtained in a man's 40s, "you can stratify risk," Dr. Vickers reported at an AUA press briefing.

"This study shows whom we really need to focus on," he added. The young men in this "top 10%" need "aggressive follow-up," such as reminder phone calls for doctors' appointments, and should have either annual or biennial PSA tests, he said.

"We need to make sure that these men really understand that they need to come back," he added.

"Currently, a lot of these men would be told: 'You're fine'," he said.

And they are fine, to a large extent. Their absolute risk of dying from prostate cancer is low, said Dr. Vickers.

However, in the study, which had a median follow-up of 27 years, 44% of all of the prostate cancer deaths occurred in this top 10% of men.

In other words, a small proportion of the men accounted for a lot of the prostate cancer deaths.

A bigger challenge than getting high-risk young men to return to the clinic for close monitoring might be getting such young men to have a PSA test in the first place, suggested Stacy Loeb, MD, from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, who was not involved in the study but who attended the press briefing.

Young men might be fearful of PSA testing "because of all the negative media attention," she said. "It's important that young men are not fearful."

PSA testing has been in steady decline since 2003/04, when about 50% of all men older than 50 years reported being tested, said William J. Catalona, MD, medical director of the Urological Research Foundation in Chicago, Illinois. Since then, "in every category of men, it's dropping," he said at the press briefing. Dr. Catalona also blamed negative media coverage. "The media doesn't cover anything good about PSA testing," he said.

Less Bold This Time

This study is an outgrowth of ongoing research from the Malmö Preventive Project in Sweden, in which Dr. Vickers and his colleagues participated.

In the new study, the Sloan-Kettering researchers retrospectively analyzed the PSA levels in some of the plasma samples drawn between 1974 and 1986 from an unscreened population-based cohort of more than 20,000 Swedish men between the ages of 33 and 50 years.

Dr. Vickers and colleagues obtained PSA information for 1167 men.

They also reviewed the Swedish Cancer Registry, which allowed for "excellent follow-up" of the men who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and identified 241 men who developed prostate cancer metastases and 163 who died from the disease. The latter were determined either by case note review or death certificate. "We know exactly what happened to these guys," said Dr. Vickers.

In 2010, the team conducted a similar study (BMJ. 2010;341:c4521), which indicated that a 1-time PSA test at 60 years can help identify men who are more likely to die from prostate cancer. The story was covered by Medscape Medical News at the time. and was awarded a journalism award from the AUA for outstanding news coverage.

In the 2010 study, Dr. Vickers and colleagues found that most of the deaths from prostate cancer were among the 25% or so of men who had, at age 60, PSA levels higher than 2 ng/mL. The study suggested that repeat screening could be confined to that 25% of men whose PSA level is above 2 ng/mL at 60 years of age.

At the time, Dr. Vickers told Medscape Medical News that the finding provided "a new way of thinking about the PSA test that offers clear recommendations for clinical practice."

This time around, the researchers have apparently backed off such bold talk.

The new study is "not a practice guideline solution," said senior author Hans Lilja, MD, PhD, also from Sloan Kettering.

Nevertheless, Dr. Vickers suggested that the new data call into question the "typical" recommendations from professional groups about PSA testing because the recommendations do not involve risk stratification.

"All men should consider biennial PSA tests starting at age 50 to age 70," is a typical recommendation, said Dr. Vickers, who then asked if, in light of this research: "Can this still be justified?"

When the 2010 study was published, Dr. Vickers said that risk-stratifying screening had 2 major benefits: it will reduce overdiagnosis in men at low risk for prostate cancer death and it will improve compliance with screening in men who will benefit the most.

The Sloan-Kettering researchers have yielded a lot of research from the Malmö cohort. At the 2007 AUA annual meeting, they reported that a single PSA measurement obtained when a man is in his 40s strongly predicts his risk for advanced-stage prostate cancer later in life, as reported by Medscape Medical News at the time.

The study was funded by grants from the National Cancer Institute, the Swedish Cancer Society, the Swedish Research Council, and several other foundations. Dr. Lilja reports holding a patent for free PSA and hK2 assays.

It is becoming increasingly clear that the prevention, treatment, and management of prostate cancer is at an intellectual as well as a practical, clinical crossroads.At a pro/con session earlier this afternoon, speakers discussed what have now become three of the most controversial issues in the management of prostate cancer:

•Can and should we use drugs like finasteride and dutasteride to prevent prostate cancer in appropriately selected patients?
•Can and should we use PSA to “screen” for prostate cancer?
•Can and should we use supplemental testosterone therapy to manage quality of life in men diagnosed with and treated for prostate cancer?
In each case, it has become clear that consensus has shifted from the absolute “yes” or “no” positions of just a few years ago to “maybe,” with a great deal of emphasis on the when and how as opposed to the “just do it” (or don’t do it) perspective.

Finasteride and dutasteride will now never be approved for the prevention of prostate cancer. However, there is clearly a subset of men who, in careful discussion with their doctors, can reasonably come to the decision that the supposed risks associated with the use of such drugs may significantly be outweighed by the potential benefits of preventing — or at least delaying the onset — of prostate cancer. And since these drugs are easily prescribed, it is likely that they will be for such patients.

Similarly, although the idea of mass, annual, population-based screening of all men for prostate cancer cannot be justified on the basis of data from trials published to date, there is certainly a strong argument for some type of PSA monitoring — particularly in men with one or more well-defined risk factors. And the question is therefore more focused on how we use PSA testing appropriately to optimize the potential to identify men at the greatest levels of risk while simultaneously seeking new and better tests for prostate cancer risk.

In the third case, there appears to be a growing consensus that — with appropriate caution and careful monitoring — supplemental testosterone is a perfectly reasonable form of treatment for many (but probably not all) men with low serum T levels, regardless of whether they have no prostate cancer, untreated, low-risk prostate cancer, or prostate cancer that has been successfully treated.

In each case we are moving back toward a mindset in which decisions about such issues need to be taken on an individual basis after discussion between doctor and patients and with an appreciation of the risks involved for the specific, individual patient.

The “New” Prostate Cancer InfoLink sees this process as a “good thing.” The “one size fits all” approach is seldom a good idea in the management of healthcare. There is too much interpersonal variation between individuals to think that what is good for Simon must inevitably be good for Saul too.

Will this need to actually think through and discuss what is appropriate for individual patients put more pressure on physicians to make time to have these discussions? Yes, it will, and it may take a while for the urology community to adapt to a new reality.

BPC is holding first urology study evening for GPs on March 30

Birmingham Prostate Clinic is holding its first study evening for GPs at the city’s Botanical Gardens on March 30.

The landmark event is open to all GPs working within the West Midlands region.

The focus is upon urology issues most relevant to primary care, including when to refer a raised PSA to a urologist, managing erectile dysfunction, BPH and the new Greenlight laser surgery and what to expect following prostate cancer surgery.

GPs can book via our online booking form and are welcome to submit a specific question, or request for a topic to be addressed during the evening.

A hot buffet will be served from 6.15pm to 7pm, with the programme running from 7pm to 9pm, followed by questions and answers from 9pm to 9.30pm. A certificate of attendance will be issued.

Mr Alan Doherty, Clinical Director of Birmingham Prostate Clinic, said: “We really value the partnership which has developed between our team and GPs since Birmingham Prostate Clinic was established five years ago.

“This event is an opportunity for GPs to meet our team of urologists, oncologist and advanced nurse practitioner and to raise any issues or questions they may have.

“The focus of the evening is upon practice in primary care – we want to ensure the evening is relevant to GPs and focused upon the issues they face.

“For example, we want to support GPs to manage patients with an elevated PSA in primary care when it is safe and appropriate to do so. We want to avoid unnecessary biopsies and raising undue anxiety.

“We also want to share the results of a major study of prostate cancer surgery which has major implications for GP management of patients after a prostatectomy and discuss new technology and techniques for Greenlight laser surgery.”

BPC consultant honoured by invitation to speak at Europe’s largest urology meeting.

BPC consultant Paul Anderson has been invited to speak at the second largest urology meeting in the world.

Mr Anderson, a nationally recognised specialist in his field, will be speaking at the 26th Annual European Association of Urology (EAU) Congress, leading a session on the modern management of BXO, also known as lichen schlerosis.

He will be addressing around 2,000 delegates from 80 different countries. The congress is the biggest European gathering of urologists discussing the latest scientific studies and cutting edge research.

“It’s a great honour to be asked to speak,” said Mr Anderson. “I’m no stranger to lecturing nationally and internationally, but there could potentially be 2,000 delegates in the audience. That’s pretty daunting but very exciting for someone only in their fourth year of consultancy.”

The EAU 2011 Congress takes place at Vienna’s Austria Centre from March 18 to 22. Mr Anderson speaks on March 20.

I don't for one minute expect Mr Anderson to mention any Mediwatch products in his speach but it's worth pointing out that the Birmingham Prostate Clinic was one of the first clinics in the UK to introduce the Mediwatch 10-minute PSA test along with the PCA3 test.

A report from the Centers for Disease Control, issued last week, suggests that as of January 1, 2007 there were nearly 2.3 million men living in the U.S. after a diagnosis of prostate cancer. The total number of people living with a specific disorder in a defined area at a point in time is known as the “prevalence” of that disorder (as compared to the “incidence,” which is the number of new cases of that disorder each year).

The relatively brief article in the March 11 issue of MMWR (the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report) addressed the continuing increase in the number of Americans who are living — and often for a very long time — after an initial diagnosis of cancer: 11.7 million in January 2007 as compared to 3.0 million in 1971 and 9.8 million in 2001.

Estimated data about prostate cancer that appear in the report include the following:

•Total prevalence: 2.276 million
•Prevalence among men > 85 years of age: 0.262 million
•Prevalence among men of 65 to 84 years of age: 1.550 million
•Prevalence among men of 40 to 64 years of age: 0.463 million
•Prevalence among men of 20 to 39 years of age: less than 500
These data are, of course, only estimates based on information from nine of the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program centers around the country, so they should be interpreted with a degree of caution, but they do continue to confirm what one might reasonably expect to see:

•The vast majority of men living with prostate cancer (79.6 percent) are more than 65 years of age.
•Prostate cancer occurs, but is extremely rare, in men of less than 40 years of age (0.2 percent).

North Devon breaches waiting target for urodynamics

North Devon Healthcare Trust breaches waiting target for urodynamics

PERFORMANCE: North Devon Healthcare Trust saw more breaches of the six week diagnostic test target in December than in the previous seven months combined.

From April to November there were only 13 breaches of the target; in December there were 24, mostly in urodynamics.

According to a report presented to NHS Devon, the urodynamics breaches follow the repatriation of a service from the Royal Devon & Exeter FT and are “the result of several issues including the loss of a key member of staff and increased referrals to the service due to its local provision”.

Actions have been taken to address the increase in referrals to the service and additional training has been given to staff members to improve cover.

Despite these actions, it is predicted a similar number of urodynamics breaches will occur in January although performance is expected to improve in February and March.

For the 5th year running Marks and Spencer are supporting Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and aim to make 2011 even bigger and better than ever. Throughout March stores will be organising a range of activities to raise money and awareness for the Charity.

This year, M&S have teamed up with celebrities Jamie Redknapp, Adrian Chiles, Ben Shephard, Les Ferdinand, Jason Leonard and Jimmy White who have designed a range of men's underwear - with all profits going to the Charity.

The pants are on sale in selected stores throughout March.

Charity pin badges, trolley tokens and bottle openers are also on sale - do show youre support and but one of these products. The money raised will help make a real difference to men's lives across the UK.

And it's not just M&S who are involved. This year a host of corporate partners are helping us raise awareness and money:

• Betfair is utilising it's links with the sporting community. A promo film featuring Betfair's partner and Champion Trainer Paul Nicholls and co-founder Andrew Black will be screened at the Cheltenham festival. Journalists and staff at Cheltenham will all wear blue ties and pin badges to spread the word.

• BlackRock's in-house cafe will be selling all things blue - from blueberry muffins to blue men pin badges.

•Keyline Builders Merchants are donating 5% of 4trade products sales to the Charity. Every store across the country has also been sent a fundrasing pack and are set to raise money by Doing Blue, along with putting up posters and handing out leaflets.

•Greenwoods Menswear are selling pin badges and trolley tokens and donating the profits of hangers and carrier bags to the Charity.

•Alliance Healthcare drivers will be wearing our "I'm aware" badges with pride targeting their 6,500 pharmaceutical customers.

• Man Group is holding a chocolate themed fundraising campaign, selling blue cakes, displaying posters and stickers and running an 'I'm aware' photo competition.

•Pirtek UK is promoting awareness month on its website, displaying posters and encouraging all staff to Do Blue.

Prostate cancer test is 'twice as good', say researchers

Scientists say they have developed an improved test for prostate cancer.

Researchers at the University of Surrey say their check is more accurate and less invasive than the current tests.

The new method could be widely available within 18 months, they say. Cancer Research UK has welcomed the findings, but says more work is needed.

More than 36,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK every year. But the initial blood-test used by doctors - the PSA test - is unreliable.

Scientists at the University of Surrey have discovered that prostate cancers secrete a chemical called EN2 that can be found in a urine test.

More accurate

Their findings from a study of 288 patients, published in the journal Clinical Cancer Research, suggest this is better than the PSA check at detecting cancers, with far fewer false positives.

One of the researchers, Professor Hardev Pandha, said the new EN2 test was more reliable and accurate.

"In this study we showed that the new test was twice as good at finding prostate cancer as the standard PSA test," he said.

"Only rarely did we find EN2 in the urine of men who were cancer free so, if we find EN2, we can be reasonably sure that a man has prostate cancer."

Larger-scale trials are now being planned in the UK and the United States. The researchers envisage the EN2 urine check would be used alongside the PSA blood test.

Stick test

Professor Pandha says it would be easy to develop a simple EN2 stick test - like a pregnancy test - that would allow men to get a result within five minutes.

"The prospect of an immediate result that doesn't involve a blood test or an embarrassing examination may be helpful in getting more men with urinary symptoms to seek medical help."

The researchers are also examining whether the amount of EN2 in the urine could indicate the severity of the cancer, and whether immediate treatment is needed.

Professor Malcolm Mason, Cancer Research UK's prostate cancer expert, welcomed the findings.

"The test seems to be simple, requiring only a urine sample, and may help in the early detection of prostate cancer.

"However, more work needs to be done to find out whether or not EN2 is capable of distinguishing between aggressive prostate cancers that need treatment, and non-aggressive ones that don't."

The scientist and TV presenter Professor Robert Winston said this was an "exciting discovery which advances the early detection of this study".

But the Chief Executive of the Prostate Cancer Charity, John Neate, cautioned that the new test was not perfect.

"Given the known limitations of the PSA blood test, we welcome this research into a new potential test for prostate cancer; however, this is a relatively small study that first needs to be validated on a much larger scale."

Another possible urine test for detection of prostate cancer?

A study just published in Clinical Cancer Research suggests that levels of a protein called engrailed-2 (EN2) in urine may be indicative of risk for prostate cancer.
According to the new article by Morgan et al., they carried out initial tests by measuring the levels of EN2 in the “first-pass” urine (prior to any digital rectal examination) of men with urinary symptoms referred to their clinic to exclude or confirm for the presence of prostate cancer and in a series of normal “controls.”

The results from this initial trial are as follows:

•Tests were conducted on urine for 82 men known to have prostate cancer and on 102 controls.
•The presence of EN2 was predictive of prostate cancer — with a sensitivity of 66 percent and a specificity of 88.2 percent.
•There was no correlation between the presence of EN2 and the level of PSA.
The authors were able to confirm these initial results in tests independently conducted at a second academic center. They conclude only that urinary EN2 is a potential candidate biomarker of prostate cancer, and that a larger multi-center study will be necessary in order to better assess the diagnostic potential of EN2.

According to information from the Press Association in the UK, EN2 is a protein that is normally expressed during the development of human embryos, but is switched off at the time of a child’s birth. The researchers have been able to show that expression of EN2 is re-activated in a large percentage of men with prostate cancer.

Professor Hardev Pandha of the University of Surrey, the leader of the research team, is quoted as saying: “In this study we showed that the new test was twice as good at finding prostate cancer as the standard PSA test. There would be great value in a simple urine test that is highly predictive of risk for prostate cancer — especially if data from such a test could be combined with PSA data to give a better ability to differentiate between risk levels for prostate cancer. However, The “New” Prostate Cancer InfoLink recognizes that potential tests like this have been identified before and gone nowhere, so we will need to wait and see whether further data confirm the initial promise of EN2

No holiday for doctors at Christchurch conference

Doctors attending an Australasian urology conference in Christchurch have been lending a helping hand in the aftermath of yesterday's earthquake.

Shortly after the quake, Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand president David Melouf offered the services of conference goers to assist with casualties on the street.

The conference was being held at the Christchurch Convention Centre with many delegates staying at the Crowne Plaza Hotel less than 500m from the collapsed Pyne Gould Corp building.

Doctors from the conference rushed to help at the Pyne Gould building, as well as The Press building in Cathedral Square and the triage centre in Hagley Park.

Tauranga doctor caught unawares

Tauranga urologist Peter Gilling worked "until there was no more work to be done" according to the Bay of Plenty Times.

After being caught in the shower during the 6.3 magnitude quake Mr Gilling grabbed his clothes and cell phone and quickly evacuated his top floor hotel room, the Times reports.

He then attended to casualties around the hotel area and in Hagley Park.

Australians not expected to stay

A conference spokesperson says the 400 Australian delegates are expected to leave Christchurch as soon as they can.

Dr Melouf has received advice that the New Zealand systems are sufficient to deal with the bulk of the crisis.

Minor injuries have been reported among conference goers but there were no reports of serious casualties or missing persons.

Study Offers New Insights into PSA

ORLANDO—New findings from a large prostate cancer (PCa) screening study may support changes in how men are selected to undergo prostate biopsy. For example, data suggest that men with an initial PSA value below 1.0 ng/mL may be able to wait much longer than those with higher values before undergoing another PSA test. The study also makes a case for establishing a PSA value of 3.0 as the threshold for prostate biopsy.

In the study of 42,376 men aged 55-74 years in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, investigators found that few men who had first-time PSA levels below 3.0 developed PCa and died from the disease. Within this group of men, the higher the initial PSA level, the greater the risk of being diagnosed with PCa and more aggressive disease and the greater the risk of dying from PCa. Compared with men who had an initial PSA below 1.0, the overall risk of a PCa diagnosis increased fourfold and 10.3-fold for those with initial PSA values of 1.0-1.9 and 2.0-2.9, respectively. The risk increased 2.7-fold and 6.2-fold for aggressive PCa and 4.0-fold and 7.6 fold for PCa mortality.

Study findings were announced at a press conference held prior to the start of the fourth annual Genitourinary Cancers Symposium. Senior investigator Monique Roobol, PhD, an epidemiologist in the Department of Urology at Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam, presented the findings.

The favorable outcomes in men with initial PSA values below 1.0 (45% of men in the study) supports prolongation of screening intervals, for example, up to eight years, Dr. Roobol told listeners.

“These results can contribute to better individual management of men in PSA-based screening programs,” she said.

“I believe this study gives us some confidence that annual PSA screening is going to soon become a thing of the past,” said Nicholas J. Vogelzang, MD, who moderated the press conference. Men with low PSA values, particularly those with values less than 1.0 and probably less than 2.0 “certainly could be considered for substantially longer intervals of PSA screening,” said Dr. Vogelzang, Chair and Medical Director of the Development Therapeutics Committee of US Oncology.

The data suggest that the traditional 4.0 threshold for prostate biopsy should drop to 3.0, he added.

“Our results strengthen the justification of the use of PSA in risk stratification for screening purposes,” said lead researcher Meelan Bul, MD, a doctoral candidate at Erasmus. “This means that we can possibly avoid unnecessary testing, diagnosis, and treatment of less aggressive disease, with the accompanying side effects, by focusing biopsies and other follow-up on men with higher initial PSAs above 3.0.”

The study is part of the larger European Randomized Study of Screening for Prostate Cancer. Participants were randomized to either screening or a control arm. Of the 42,376 men, 19,950 were initially screened and biopsies were recommended for those with PSA levels of 3.0 or higher, with four-year screening intervals. The median follow-up was 11 years.

A total of 15,758 subjects (79%) had an initial PSA level below 3.0. Between 1993 and 2008, 915 (5.8%) of these men were diagnosed with PCa and 23 (0.14%) died from the disease (five with screen-detected and 18 with interval-detected cancer). Of the 915 men, 182 had their cancers detected between screenings. This frequently indicated a faster-moving disease, according to researchers.

Overall, 169 men (1.1%) had aggressive PCa, defined as clinical stage greater than T2c, Gleason score greater than 8, a PSA level greater than 20.0, positive lymph nodes, or metastases at diagnosis.

Only 129 (1.8%) of the 7,126 men with PSA scores below 1.0 were eventually diagnosed with PCa and only three died from the malignancy (0.04%). Of the 129 PCa cases, 31 (0.4%) were considered to be aggressive.

Of the 6,156 subjects with PSA levels of 1.0-1.9, PCa developed in 415 (6.7%), aggressive PCa developed in 72 (1.2%), and 11 died from the cancer (0.18%). Among the 2,476 men with PSA levels of 2.0-2.9, PCa was diagnosed in 371 (15.0%), aggressive PCa was diagnosed in 66 (2.7%), and nine died from the disease (0.36%).

The symposium is co-sponsored by the American Society for Clinical Oncology, the American Society for Radiation Oncology, and the Society of Urologic Oncology.

Physicians’ reluctance to stay in villages worries PM

The prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, has expressed her concern over the physicians’ reluctance to stay in remote areas and provide service to rural people.

‘If all physicians stay in capital Dhaka, how would the villagers get medical services?’ she said.

The prime minister raised the question while addressing the inaugural function of 3-day 7th International Scientific Conference and Workshop on Urology at Sonargaon Hotel on Saturday.

European School of Urology, Asian School of Urology and Bangladesh Association of Urological Surgeons jointly arranged the conference and the workshop marking the 3rd Asian-European School of Urology Course 2011.

The prime minister said the physicians must build their mentality to work in remote villages.

Reiterating the government commitment to reach the quality healthcare facilities to the poor people, she said from today, urology treatment facilities were being extended to 12 medical college hospitals in Dhaka, Chittagong and 10 other districts.

‘From now on, rural people will not require coming to Dhaka for urological medical services,’ Hasina said.

She said the government has already created 150 posts for urologists and recruitment was on to replenish the posts.

The prime minister said treatment of kidney and urological diseases was very sensitive. The number of kidney and urology patients in the country is about 1.60 crore. (Just to add that 1 crore is equal to 10 million)

She said in the past, kidney and urology patients had to wait for many days to get treatment due to shortage of beds, human resources and infrastructure facilities in the hospitals.

After setting up kidney and urology hospital, she said people’s sufferings were reduced significantly, Hasina remarked.

‘Last BNP-Jamaat government did not increase human resources and other facilities in the hospital as a result thousands of patients were deprived of getting medical services from specialist physicians of the country,’ she said.

The prime minister said it would be possible to start operations of the planned 18,000 community health clinics by 2014.

Already, a total of 10,333 community health clinics have started operation across the country, she said.

Hasina said the last BNP-Jamaat alliance government had closed the community health clinic project just on political ground.

She said the process was on to recruit 13,500 community healthcare providers for the community health clinics and 32,000 3rd and class four employees at different hospitals and health complexes.

Besides, 1,420 first class, 62 second class, and 1,182 third and class four jobs have been created while already 4,331 physicians, 1747 nurses and 6,391 health assistants have been appointed, Hasina said.

The prime minister said the government was committed to building more hospitals on the basis of public-private partnership.

Government medical colleges will be set up in Kushtia, Satkhira, Kishoreganj and Rangamati while permission has been given for establishing three medical colleges, three homoeopathic colleges and over 40 medical assistant training schools and institutes of health technology at private initiatives, Hasina said.

She said the newly built Institute of Neuroscience and Hospital would soon be made operational.

The prime minister urged the physicians and scientists to concentrate on applied researches apart from theoretical fundamental researches for extending cheaper medical facilities to the poor people.

On higher education, she said the government had started working to establish six new specialised universities. Like any other service sector, she said the health sector must be made modern and technology-based for giving fast and quality services to the poor people.

Health minister AFM Ruhal Haq, PM’s advisers Syed Mudasser Ali and HT Imam, SAM Golam Kibria and Mohammad Nurul Huda Lenin spoke at the function presided over by AKM Anwarul Islam, president of Bangladesh Association of Urological Surgeons.

Dhaka, Feb 5 (bdnews24.com) — The prime minister has said that 12 medical colleges of Bangladesh will have 150 more urologists to better serve the rural patients.

"They won't have to turn to Dhaka now," Sheikh Hasina said at the inauguration of seventh international science conference and third Asian-European school of urology course at Sonargaon Hotel on Saturday.

"There are around 16 million kidney and urology patients in Bangladesh. The rural patients will get treatment in 10 districts outside Dhaka and Chittagong."

She also outlined her government's efforts to ensure health services for the people.

Urodynamics testing now available at St. Francis

Maryville, Mo. — It is an uncomfortable and, for many, deeply embarrassing problem, but researchers estimate that urinary incontinence affects one out of every four women in the United States.

Since late last year, however, local women suffering from this condition have had a new resource for evaluating and obtaining treatment in an atmosphere that stresses privacy, respect and confidentiality.

In December, St. Francis Hospital & Health Services began offering monthly urodynamics testing through the Bladder Health Network. A urodynamics assessment shows how well the bladder and urethra are doing their jobs so that health-care professionals can prescribe treatment strategies.

"Testing is important because urinary problems have different causes and are treated differently depending upon the cause," said Dr. Jane Dawson, an obstetrician and gynecologist on staff at St. Francis. "Patients can be treated with medicine, physical therapy, surgery or lifestyle changes depending on the results."

Symptoms can include leaking, difficulty emptying the bladder, frequent urination, recurrent infections and loss of bladder support. Dawson said diabetes, previous pregnancies and a physical history of frequent lifting are among the causes.

"Before testing was available, treatment was based on what the patient told us," Dawson said. "Now a patient's treatment can be tailored more precisely to the actual cause, which improves the results."

Urodynamics employs sophisticated equipment that measures the amount of pressure experienced by the bladder and urethra and provides data used to evaluate the function and efficiency of a patient's urinary system.

"The analysis is professional and supplies a complete detailed report," Dawson said.

Women with urinary incontinence often fail to receive appropriate care, which can result in their forgoing favorite activities, exercise and travel. Some deny themselves treatment out of embarrassment, or believe the condition is a normal part of the aging process. This is a myth. Dawson, said.

"While incontinence is a common problem, it is not normal at any age," she said.

Experts believe they can develop a genetic screening test that can tell doctors which men with prostate cancer need aggressive treatment.

Early trial results for Cancer Research UK suggest men with high levels of cell cycle progression (CCP) genes have the most deadly tumours.

The CCP test could potentially save men with milder forms of the disease from unnecessary treatment.

Large-scale studies are now needed, the Lancet Oncology journal reports.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK, with new cases diagnosed in around 37,000 men every year.

At present, doctors can struggle to predict how aggressive tumours are and rely on tests and examinations that can be less than reliable.

For example, one of the tests currently used - the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test - can give a worrying result even if a cancer is not present.

Cancer Research UK estimates that about two-thirds of men with an elevated PSA level (measured as > 4ng/ml) will not have prostate cancer but will suffer the anxiety, discomfort and risk of follow-up investigations.

It's for this very reason that UK experts have recommended against a screening programme for prostate cancer.

But experts from Queen Mary, University of London, hope their new CCP test - alongside existing tests like PSA - could be used routinely in the clinic to overcome this problem.

Greater accuracy

Professor Jack Cuzick, who led the research, said: "Our findings have great potential. CCP genes are expressed at higher levels in actively growing cells, so we could be indirectly measuring the growth rate and inherent aggressiveness of the tumour through our test.

"We already know that CCP levels can predict survival for breast and, more recently, brain and lung cancers.

"It's really encouraging that this could also be applied to prostate cancer, where we desperately need a way to predict how aggressive the disease will be."

His study, which included 703 men with prostate cancer, found CCP could predict likely disease outcomes.

In the study, men with the highest levels of CCP genes were three times more likely than those with the lowest levels to have a fatal form of prostate cancer.

And for patients who have had surgery to remove their prostate, those with the highest CCP levels were 70% more likely to have a recurrence of the disease.

Dr Helen Rippon, head of research management at the Prostate Cancer Charity, said the findings were promising but needed replicating in larger trials before the test could be considered for routine use.

"It will therefore be some time before men diagnosed with prostate cancer will see any direct benefit from this research," she said.

A new report just published on line in Lancet Oncology is suggesting that the cell cycle progression (CCP) score — a measure of the levels of expression of selected genes that are important to cell growth — may be an important indicator of risk for more aggressive types of prostate cancer.

The article by Cuzick et al. describes a study to investigate the prognostic value of a predefined CCP score in tissue samples from three existing cohorts of patients with prostate cancer. Two cohorts of patients (in the USA) had already undergone a radical prostatectomy to treat their disease; the third cohort of patients (in the UK) were initially diagnosed as a consequence of a transurethral resection of the prostate (a TURP) and then followed until death. It is very important to understand that the data from this study are retrospective and not prospective.

Cuzick and his colleagues initially measured the levels of expression of a total of 31 genes involved in CCP. They used these data to develop a predefined CCP “score” and then they set out to evaluate the value of the CCP score in predicting risk for progressive disease in the men who had undergone an RP or risk of prostate cancer-specific mortality in the men who had been diagnosed by a TURP and managed by watchful waiting.

The findings of this study can be summarized as follows:

•Among patients in the two RP cohorts
◦The CCP score could predict biochemical recurrence in univariate analysis (hazard ratio [HR] for a doubling in CCP = 1·89; p=5·6×10−9).
◦The CCP score could predict biochemical recurrence in the final multivariate analysis (HR =1·77; p=4·3×10−6).
◦The CCP score and the PSA level were the most important and the most clinically significant variables in the best predictive model (the final multivariate analysis).
•Among patients in the TURP cohort
◦The CCP score could predict time to death from prostate cancer in univariate analysis (HR = 2·92; p=6·1×10−22).
◦The CCP score could predict time of death from prostate cancer in the final multivariate analysis (HR = 2·57; p=8·2×10−11).
◦The CCP score was stronger than all other prognostic factors (although PSA levels added useful information).
Clearly the CCP score is an important prognostic marker of risk for progressive prostate cancer. However, it would be wise of us to have some degree of caution about interpreting exactly what this study is telling us.

In the first place, at this time, we have no prospective validation of the data from this study. To get such validation, ideally, one would want to be able to:

•Assess CCP scores based on data from biopsy specimens of patients
•Assess CCP scores based on data from subsequent RP specimens from the same patients
•Compare the predictions of the two sets of CCP scores to actual outcomes over time.
In addition, simple biochemical recurrence would not be sufficient. We would ideally need to know data from biochemical recurrence before and after first- and second-line therapy and the PSA doubling times (or some other measure of rate of progression) in order to have a clear picture of the aggressiveness of the cancer post-treatment. Such a study could take a while.

A Reuters commentary on this paper points out that a test is already available that would allow commercialization of CCP score testing. This is the Prolaris test available from Myriad Genetics. (It is not clear yet, but it may well have been a modified version of the Prolaris test that was used to assess CCP scores in the study by Cuzick et al.) We commented on the potential of the Prolaris test about a year ago.

At the very end of the Reuters commentary, Reuters quotes Dr. Helen Rippon, the head of research management for the British Prostate Cancer Charity, as saying that CCP testing would need to be “comprehensively trialed in large numbers of men before it can be introduced into routine clinical practice.”

The “New” Prostate Cancer InfoLink is in complete agreement with Dr. Rippon. However exciting the possibility of CCP testing looks, based on the data available to date, we still need careful and comprehensive prospective studies to demonstrate that this type of testing is really able to discriminate with high levels of accuracy between clinically significant and clinically insignificant forms of prostate cancer. Retrospective data of the type reported in Lancet Oncology is interesting — but not clinically definitive at all.

The American Cancer Society has just released its biannual report entitled Cancer Facts & Figures for African Americans 2011-2012. The report suggests that there will be 35,110 new cases of prostate cancer and 5,300 prostate cancer-specific deaths among the African American community in 2011. This means that 40 percent of all cases of cancer in African American men will be caused by cancer of the prostate.

The age-adjusted incidence of prostate cancer among the African American community for the period 2003 to 2007 was 229.4/100,000 as compared to 143.5/100,000 among whites in the USA. This means that an African American male is now “only” 1.6 times as likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer as a white male of the same age.

The other good news is that the 5-year survival of African American prostate cancer patients for the period 1999 to 2006 is almost exactly comparable to that for white patients in the US over the same time period. Similarly, the stage distribution at diagnosis for African Americans and whites is also closely comparable for the period from 1999 to 2006.

At the other end of the scale, the prostate cancer-specific mortality rate among African Americans is still 2.4 times the rate for whites. It is likely that this mortality rate reflects the fact that 10 to 15 years ago African Americans were being diagnosed later and with more advanced disease that whites. Now that the stage distribution at diagnosis is similar for whites and African Americans, we can reasonably expect to see the difference in the prostate cancer-specific mortality rate gradually decline over time, but this may still take another 10 to 15 years to balance out.

The bottom line is that being African American is still a significant risk factor for prostate cancer as compared to being white. There are almost certainly genetic factors at play here, but we still haven’t been able to determine the importance of such factors with any real degree of certainty, and other factors such as diet and socioeconomic circumstance are probably part of the mix. It will be important to continue to emphasize the importance of careful monitoring of African American males for prostate cancer risk as they move into their early 40s — especially if there is also a family history of prostate cancer. Having said that, it will be equally important not to over-treat indolent forms of prostate cancer in the African American community.

Ambassador to Germany, Dr. Peter Boehm, and the Canadian High Commissioner to Dusseldorf, Leslie Reissner, paid a visit to the Thought Technology Ltd. booth at Medica, where 137,000 visited for 4 days.

Under the GSA Federal Supply Schedule Contract, Mediwatch USA Inc. will be able to tender for contracts from 15 December 2010 to 15 September 2013. The Federal annual requirement for pelvic floor products and services is estimated to be approximately $34 million. Under this contract Mediwatch will be able to tender for products in this sector.

Philip Stimpson, Chief Executive Officer of Mediwatch commented:

"Mediwatch is proud to have the opportunity to market to the US Government's hospitals and institutions. Moving into the US government sector on a contract basis is a key and integral part of Mediwatch USA Inc.'s planned growth strategy."

Mediwatch will also qualify to contract for various unrestricted, small business opportunities, which are specifically set aside for smaller businesses and offered by the Federal Government for health care equipment, per diem, staffing and services.

Commenting specifically about these opportunities, Philip Stimpson stated:

"Mediwatch USA Inc. is ready to take the lead as a contractor on many of the small business set aside requirements issued by the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs' health care systems."

The decision not to carry out a UK National screening program for prostate cancer was expected but the Prostate Cancer Charity comments were a little surprising and welcome in the light of past negative comments regarding the PSA test.

The UK NSC has now completed its reviews of screening for prostate cancer and bladder cancer and the decision made at the meeting on 10 November was that screening is not currently recommended for these conditions."

The Prostate Cancer Charity comments on the latest announcement by the UK National Screening Committee not to recommend the development of a screening programme for prostate cancer using the PSA blood test.

John Neate, Chief Executive of The Prostate Cancer Charity, explains: “Although this decision is not a surprise, the announcement from the UK National Screening Committee today is extremely disappointing. While the evidence points to the potential risk of over diagnosis and over treatment through large scale PSA testing, we also know that for some men with aggressive prostate cancer, but no symptoms, the PSA test will be the only early indicator of the cancer at a time when effective treatment can be offered. This makes it essential that all eligible men* are made aware of the test and enabled to make a personal choice about whether it is right for them.

“We believe that a critical opportunity to fully address the inequities faced by men seeking access to the PSA test has been missed. We know that 70 per cent of men over 50 are unaware of the test’s existence or their right to request one from their GP. We also know that this roadblock in accessing the test widens even further for those men from less affluent backgrounds. This is a completely unacceptable state of affairs.

“Although we will always seek to work constructively with Government, the status quo cannot continue. It is a regrettable that this announcement has been made in isolation by the UK National Screening Committee and that a key opportunity to reflect on the wider issues surrounding awareness of prostate cancer and the PSA test was not grasped. This could have been a breakthrough moment for Government to give a firm steer on this critical health issue.

“We will ensure that PSA testing for eligible men is not simply returned to the back-burner and will over the coming months be launching a vigorous and constructive campaign to break this impasse.”

Minimum standards for training and certification in urodynamics have been established nationally by a multidisciplinary working party in the UK.

The standards suggest a modular training structure and establish minimum workloads for individuals and departments, while advocating the need for multidisciplinary teams and regular audits of their work.
